What Health and Safety Means to Cair

28/04/25

Each year, World Day for Safety and Health at Work shines a spotlight on the importance of creating safe, healthy, and decent work environments. For us at Cair, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on what health and safety means in our world.

From the very first sketch on a designer’s notepad to the moment our products reach someone’s hands, health and safety is part of every step of the journey. Our mission is simple: to develop equipment that protects and empowers the people who use it; whether that’s someone relying on our CairFall to detect a fall, or being woken by the Vibe vibrating pillow pad when a smoke detector has been activated. Building safe products involves a lot of careful thinking, testing, and refining.

Designing with Safety in Mind

Whenever we develop a new product, we’re always thinking about two key groups: the end user and our production team. That means looking at everything from the materials we use, considering whether chemicals are safe or if there are any risks during handling, to the shape and size of the product, if they could cause strain or injury during use, or even if there are sharp edges. We also have to consider how the product is used in real life. Take a PIR movement sensor as an example. In some scenarios, it might be used for intruder detection; if it fails, it’s annoying, but not dangerous. But in a ‘proof of life’ application, false detections could pose real risks. So we test the sensor under different temperatures, humidity levels, and battery conditions to ensure it works exactly when it needs to. Safety isn’t just about avoiding harm, it’s about making sure help arrives when it’s needed most.

Safety on the Production Line

When we move into production, health and safety is equally as important. We’re continuously identifying risks, implementing control measures, and improving processes, not just for our team, but for everyone involved throughout the supply chain. Hazards are always on our radar: machinery, materials, chemicals, even the layout of the workspace. Where we can, we remove them entirely. When that’s not possible, we substitute with safer alternatives or ensure the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is in place. Everyone on our team receives training in safe work practices, hazard awareness, and emergency procedures. We also believe in learning from every incident or near-miss, no matter how small; every lesson helps us do better next time.

Logistics, Lone Working & Looking Out for Each Other

Once the product is built, it’s time to get it out the door, safely. Whether it’s lifting heavy items, operating machinery, or simply keeping walkways clear, every part of our logistics process is designed with safety in mind. In our back warehouse, we encourage team members to work in pairs whenever possible. But when lone working is necessary we actually use our Onyx pendant to keep staff safe. The pendant connects to a Notifier pager, allowing lone workers to call for help if they need it. Safety isn’t just something we sell, it’s something we live by.

Quality You Can Rely On

Before anything leaves our facility, it undergoes rigorous quality checks. We need to know that every item meets the high standards our users expect and deserve. Health and safety is also built into the way our products function. Many devices, like the Onyx pendant, send low battery alerts to ensure they’re always ready to do their job. But it’s not just about the technology, it’s about the people behind the scenes: the ones monitoring alerts, responding to incidents, and ensuring everything works as it should.

People First, Always

At Cair, we believe people are at the heart of health and safety. Whether they’re designing a product, using it, building it, or monitoring it, their safety matters. So while World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a chance to raise awareness, for us, it’s business as usual. Because when it comes to health and safety, we don’t just care, we Cair.

End.
